Japanese garden design is unique in the way that it creates miniature versions of large landscapes found in nature. The practice itself is highly regarded as a form of art in Japan. For our clients, it serves as a personal retreat from their every day lives. Lenny Clark, founder of Kona Land and Water Escapes major emphasis of study at Arizona State University was Asian Studies. He also studied on multiple occasions in Japan and in the U.S. We have been building Japanese style landscapes for many years, from interactive bonsai gardens to amazing all-natural scenery. We can bring a little piece of Japan to your home in Arizona.

There are many styles of Japanese garden design that you may want to consider. Here are some of our most popular designs:

  1. Tea gardens- Chaniwa
  2. Pond and island design
  3. Japanese stroll gardens - Kaiyushiki
  4. Courtyard gardens
  5. Zen gardens or Dry gardens - Karesansui

Tea gardens are the most popular. They combine informal and formal styles. They begin with a charming outer-garden that brings guests through a gate to an inner garden.

Pond and island Japanese garden design showcases the delicate balance of nature, blending the overall landscape to be visible in the distance. A naturally shaped pond surrounds the land. A bridge or footpath leads you onto the island.

Stroll gardens are popular designs for large and small backyards as well. They take the best elements of pond and island and tea garden designs and combine them. Expansive pathways lead you through the gardens so that you may walk while admiring nature along the way.

Courtyard Japanese garden design is perfect for those that want to incorporate existing scenic views. The traditional Asian style is simple and doesn’t require much space. It creates a focal point for you and your guests to enjoy.

Zen gardens use a variety of rocks and raked gravel to represent water and islands. They are very pretty to look at, but are also sometimes very delicate. For example, a pattern may be drawn into a sand garden to symbolize water.

Although you have a choice in type of Japanese garden design, all have certain plants that are common throughout.

  • Evergreen Pear, Orchid trees, Purple Plumb
  • Black pines
  • Bonsai plants
  • Flowers
  • Bamboo

Bradford Pear, Orchid and Purple Plum trees are meant to change with the seasons and represent the continuous changes in life. The black pine is another common tree and symbolizes stability as are flowers like azaleas, mums and peonies. Bamboo is traditional as well as functional. It grows very fast and requires little maintenance. We plant only noninvasive, non-running bamboo which is grown in our own nursery acclimatized for Arizona climate.

Rocks and boulders are essential for symbolizing mountains and islands. They can be as big or small as your backyard can accommodate. Water is an important part of the culture as well. Many of our clients include a pond or waterfall in their design. Some even include colorful koi fish. Families with children especially like this option because they become easy to care for outdoor pets.
